Pricing Your First AI Project as a Solo Operator
Marcus Bell · September 15, 2025
The first client project is where most solo AI businesses set the wrong precedent — usually by pricing based on hours instead of outcomes.
Stop pricing the build
Clients aren't paying for the hours it takes you to wire up a workflow. They're paying for the hours it saves them, every week, going forward. Anchor your price to that saved time, not your build time.
Scope the maintenance, not just the launch
An AI tool that breaks silently when an API changes isn't done — it's a support ticket waiting to happen. Every proposal we teach students to send includes a maintenance line item, priced separately from the build.
A simple starting formula
Estimate the weekly hours saved, multiply by a reasonable hourly rate for the client's business, and price monthly at a fraction of that value. It's not perfect, but it reliably beats guessing — and it gives you language for the pricing conversation instead of dreading it.
